“An absolutely rockin’ Danish outfit using material from extreme noise, free jazz and creative rock to build a sound and energy that is giving new perspectives on alternative music! Inyourface and without compromises!” – Mats Gustafsson
Selvhenter are part of the art collective eget værelse and have already been active for 8 years.
Selvhenter honed a truly unique sound – an uncompromising, boundless energetic one that blends the aesthetics of experimental rock, the sophistication of improvised free jazz and the aggressiveness of punk, noise and metal, all performed with passion and humor, sometimes even as music fit for dancing.
The all-women quintet Selvhenter is part of the bustling and sprawling Copenhagen underground. In a controlled eruption of two drumkits and distorted trombone, violin and alto saxophone they kick against rationalism of the welfare society – and show us that passion doesn’t have to be sung, but can flourish as collective instrumental cramps.

What kind of music would emerge if you combined a pair of renowned Danish electronic producers with two of the most exciting jazz musicians around?
This was the question in the minds of the Copenhagen Strøm Festival curators. The answer? It arrived in the form of Scandinavian electro pioneers Rumpistol and Spejderrobot—two prominent characters with a reputation well beyond their home countries—along with guitarist Niclas Knudsen and drummer/percussionist Emil de Waal. These four talented strangers, introduced with minimal rehearsal time, were brought together and launched onstage, and KALAHA was born. A daring experiment to say the least.
From the spontaneous and infectious magic of their first show came their critically acclaimed debut album “Hahaha”, the sound taking its inspiration in equal parts from West-African funk, electro rave and jazz improvisation, standing up as best possible blending of musical worlds—highly energetic and expressive, triggering the listener to dance with the head just as much as the heart.
Online Music Magazine Earmilk.com says it best with its statement: “KALAHA transport fans into another world”
Their four releases to date have proved to be captivating experiences, epitomized by their distinctive sound design as well as the outstanding instrumental contributions of the protagonists. It comes as no surprise that their albums not only gather constant acclaim in among vinyl connoisseurs, but have also brought KALAHA numerous Danish Music Awards nominations as well as a place on the playlists of European radio stations.
The renowned DJ and BBC6 host Gilles Peterson has said the following about the album ”Masala”: “Very tropical again! You can hear that African lo-fi influence on the whole album”
However many records they put out, though, they were born on stage, and it’s in a live setting that their music rises to another level. In over 80 shows KALAHA have created euphoria among audiences worldwide who hardly ever imagined they would dance so hard to jazz.

“Mames Babegenush forges an organic sound with the momentum of life. The band pushes the perimeter of klezmer to incorporate many cultures, all fragrant with fecund growth and potential. This is joyous music even when it is not.”
– C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz
“It is truly a feast for the hungry klezmer fan. Expanding the boundaries of traditional Jewish music.”
– Tom Nevell, Songlines
“Mames Babegenush is melding the vital, vibrant heart of the klezmer – it’s imaginative, moving and brassily abrupt.”
– John Pheby, fROOTS
“Mames Babegenush has hit upon a winning combination of artistry and originality while simultaneously being faithful to the tradition and pushing the genre forward.”
– Keith Wolzinger, KlezmerPodcast
Mames Babegenush is the past world meeting the present. It is Jewish dance music united with new waves of modern music: a fresh blend of music genres that appeals to both the heart and the feet.
Formed in 2004 the six-piece ensemble quickly dazzled audiences as well as critics with their fresh sound and musical gumption. The group spent years to perfect the style of traditional Jewish dance music, but always insisted on leaving their personal mark in contemporary klezmer. Live on stage, Mames Babegenush is a unique acquaintance, who unfolds a dynamic universe never seen before.
In 2008 David Krakauer, Alicia Svigals, Michael Alpert and Josh Dolgin (SoCalled) selected Mames Babegenush to the Carnegie Hall Young Artist Program. The following year the band released their acclaimed debut ‘Klezmer Killed The Radio Star’ which landed a nomination at the Danish Music Award.
In 2010 the ensemble experienced a career highlight when they participated in the 2nd International Jewish Music Competition in Amsterdam. As the only ensemble, it was the winner of three prizes – the Jury’s Special Prize for cultural bridge building in music, the Booker’s Prize and the biggest prize of them all; The Audience Prize for best live performance.
In 2014 Mames Babegenush released their latest album forging their strong Scandinavian roots into the vibrant dance music of Eastern Europe. From the great ambience of Nordic pine trees to a lively wedding in Romania this album gives the listener a sense of both melancholy and ecstatic joy.
The milestone record represents a new path in their sound integrating string quartet, harp and children’s choir into their musical universe.
The group is currently touring and working on new material.
Throughout their career, Mames Babegenush has played some of the most storied venues and festivals worldwide such as Carnegie Hall (US), The Royal Danish Theater, The Danish Radio House, The DROMA Festival (US), KlezFiesta (AR), Roskilde Festival (DK), Festspillene I Bergen (NO), POPKOMM (DE), KlezMore (AT), Yiddish Heritage Festival (RO), Klezmer Festival Fürth (DE) and Paradiso (NL).

Mads Tolling, internationally renowned violinist and composer, is a two-time Grammy Award-Winner and the 2016 DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star winning violinist. As a former nine-year member of both Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke’s band, Mads has spent most his professional life touring internationally. Since 2007 Mads has lead his own group, Mads Tolling Quartet. “The Playmaker” released in the fall of 2009, features Stanley Clarke and jazz greats Russell Ferrante & Stefon Harris. A MTQ album: “Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty – Live at Yoshi’s” was released in May, 2012. Mads’ latest album is called “Mads Tolling & The Mads Men – Playing the 60s,” which features classic songs from TV, film and radio in fresh jazzy versions with his quartet and guest vocalists Kenny Washington, Kalil Wilson and Spencer Day. Mads has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, and his recordings have received rave reviews in Downbeat Magazine, Strings Magazine, Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. He has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron & Paquito D’Rivera.
For nine years in Turtle Island Quartet, Mads spent most of his professional life on the road or in the recording studio. In ‘06 and ‘08 as part of Turtle Island Quartet Mads won two Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover album with the recordings “4+Four” and “A Love Supreme – The Legacy of John Coltrane.” In 2015 with Turtle Island, he received a Grammy nomination collaborating with Mike Marshall. Mads is the winner of the 2016 DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star Violin Award. Mads has received Denmark’s Sankt Annae’s Award for Musical Excellence as well as grants from Queen Margaret, Sonning Foundation and the Berklee Elvin Jones Award.
In 2007 Mads Tolling started his own trio and immediately recorded the album “Speed of Light.” The following year the trio expanded to a quartet. Today, 10 years later the quartet is still going strong, and in it are some of the top Bay Area musicians, including Colin Hogan on piano, Sam Bevan on bass and Eric Garland on drums. The Mads Tolling Quartet has performed all over the U.S including Yoshi’s San Francisco & Oakland, Herbst Theatre, Russian River Jazz Festival, Yerba Buena Gardens, Grass Valley Performance Arts, Blues Alley in Washington DC, Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls, Monterey Jazz Festival and many venues large and small across the US.
Mads grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark and moved to the U.S. at the age of 20 to pursue jazz studies. He studied under violinist Matt Glaser, and he graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2003. While still attending Berklee, the renowned jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty recommended Mads to join Stanley Clarke’s band. Since then, Mads performed more than one hundred concerts with Clarke worldwide, including the Newport Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl and appears on Clarke’s album: “Toys of Men.”
Besides his activities as a performer, Mads Tolling is an accomplished composer. In addition to his original writing on his albums, Mads arranged one of his compositions for saxophonist Joe Lovano and string orchestra. Of his three prior recordings of original material, one features the legendary pianist JoAnne Brackeen. Mads has recorded with vibraphonist Dave Samuels, appears on RMB singer Teena Marie’s recording “La Dona” and on jazz vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway’s “At Last.” He has additionally contributed numerous arrangements and compositions to Turtle Island Quartet’s repertoire. In 2014 Mads was commissioned by Music Director, Michael Morgan and the James Irvine Foundation to write a Violin Concerto (“Begejstring”) for Oakland Symphony Orchestra. The highly anticipated performance took place at the sold out 3000 seat Paramount Theatre in 2015. The piece and the performance turned out to be an overwhelming success, and Mads received high praise from the orchestra, critics and audience alike.
Mads Tolling is a thriving force in the educational aspects of jazz and improvisation. He is a Yamaha clinician and has been involved in workshops, coachings and master classes throughout Canada and the U.S. Since 2010 Mads has been on faculty at Berkeley’s Jazzschool Institute mainly focusing on spreading the knowledge of jazz and groove oriented styles to string players of all ages. He is on faculty at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and he has taught at the Mark O’Connor Fiddle Camp. In 2017 Mads presented a workshop at Jazz Education Network in New Orleans.
